Gary V: It’s time to let go
Gary Valenciano can’t help but feel emotional because his sons, Paolo and Gab are about to start new phases in their lives.
Paolo married long-time girlfriend Samantha Godinez last Feb. 7 while Gab is heading to America to study music. He'll be leaving in March.
“It’s a double whammy for me and Angeli (his wife). Sometimes blessings are difficult when you know you’ve done well with your children but they have to go,” Gary said at the anniversary press conference of the Sunday variety show “ASAP 18.”
Gary’s tweet on Paolo’s wedding day read: “Today the wedding bells ring and two become one as they anchor their love and union on you Jesus. Be their God forever.”
While he is happy for his sons’ new endeavors, Gary is concerned about bidding Gab a temporary goodbye.
“It’s difficult because between Paolo and Gab, when Paolo gets married, he’s in the Philippines. When Gab leaves, I really, really think he’s going to end up staying in the States because he’s already met people there. He’s met the people I know and they’ve already said, ‘You come to the States we’ll work together.’
It took years before Gab finally decided to pursue his studies abroad. He also had to earn and save money first. Once he flies to the US, Gab will leave not just his “Sarah G Live” co-hosting chores but his girlfriend Coleen Garcia.
Gary also shared that Gab, who’s taking a hybrid course and does music for blu-ray, games and movies, has a bright future in music production.
“I think kasi his instructors have been e-mailing him and telling him, ‘We’re listening to your products and you have a place in the industry.’ And he (Gab) was like, ‘Okay, dad, here we go. Here we go.’
Fatherly advice
Gary adds that his second son always wanted to marry early. But Mr. Pure Energy advised Gab to take his time and seize the opportunities he’s getting.
“Times are very different now. You can take your time, decide your life. And then go and pursue. I told him ang galing-galing mong dancer. You write better beats than your dad. Your star maybe is not meant to shine here for now. Maybe it’s out there. That’s because the world is so different now.”
He feels his sons are pressured to become like their father. But Gary would rather see them make their own paths without trying to be like him.
“My number one concern is that they’re under my wings. Especially with Paolo, (I tell him), ‘I don’t expect you to sing like me, talk like me.’ Only now that Paolo is coming out into the open. But he never wanted it because tinutukso siya ng mga tao, ‘Kaya mo yang ginagawa ng kapatid mo?’ He would walk out of the concerts during the time na nagsasayaw kami ni Gab, then he would come back. I never knew that. So, I told him not to think like that,” Gary said.
